The Grass Valley Way

Be Respectful      Be Safe      Be Responsible

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

At Grass Valley, we believe in fostering every child's social emotional growth and well-being. We take a multi-faceted approach to well-being by using PBIS-Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports, The Toolbox, a SEL curriculum, and Restorative Justice based Community Circles. We are also working to instill a growth mindset in our students through more personalized and project based learning where persistence and resilience are keys to success.

The Toolbox: A Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum

Toolbox is a research-based social-emotional learning curriculum.  It teaches critical social competencies necessary for academic and life success such as: resiliency, self-management, and responsible decision-making skills.

Years of research in the field of childhood resiliency and social-emotional learning have taught us that emotional and behavioral regulation skills can be explicitly taught in schools and that the benefits are huge!

Restorative Justice

Community Circles

"Restorative Justice builds a school community’s social emotional intelligence, relationships, and capacity to address challenges together. It helps create a community where healing is possible. Restorative Justice not only strengthens relationships between adults and students; but among adults, and among students as well. In this way, RJ creates a positive, inclusive school culture; enhances teaching and learning; and acts as a preventative measure, as school communities are better equipped to resolve conflicts as they appear, before they escalate into a bigger issue." -excerpt from OUSD's Restorative Justice web page

At Grass Valley, we use RJ community circles to foster stronger bonds among students and the teacher in each classroom. This helps students learn to take responsibility for not only their own actions, but also builds responsibility for the well-being of the classroom community.

Fostering a Growth Mindset Through Personalized & Project Based Learning
Students at Grass Valley have the opportunity to build their skills and competencies by engaging in challenging academic content where the students themselves make choices about the direction their learning will take.
